No commemoration day for the August 14 earthquake in Jérémie


This August 14, 2022 marks the first anniversary of the earthquake that severely shook the department of Grand'Anse. A date that cannot be forgotten. Yet the authorities seem to have trouble remembering or at least doing everything so that this first anniversary goes unnoticed.


No ceremony of tribute to the victims and activities were carried out in the city of poets this Sunday to commemorate the first year of the earthquake of August 14. Relatives, friends and Internet users are trying to remember this sad day by publishing photos of the victims who died during this natural disaster. Others are content just, with a Facebook or Twitter post, to salute the memory of the victims.


"We tried to organize a ceremony to commemorate the first anniversary of the earthquake of August 14, but unfortunately we did not find the money in time", tells the newspaper the mayor of the city of Jérémie, Claude Harry Milord. Reached by telephone Mr. Milord, who is currently in another city in the country, says he regrets this situation.


Le Nouvelliste tried in vain to get in touch this Sunday with the secretary general of the office of the Grand'Anse Delegation, César Louissaint.


However, in a message posted on his Twitter account, Prime Minister Ariel Henry invites all Haitians to meditate on this day which brings to their memory “tortuous and macabre memories”, can we read in this message. He also announced the development, with international partners, of a recovery and reconstruction plan for the Great South, in accordance with urbanization and land use planning standards in line with the Sustainable Development Goals on the horizon. of 2030.



To recall, according to figures available for the department of Grand'Anse, 227 deaths were recorded and 29 people were missing. 108 schools were totally destroyed, 115 others damaged, etc.
