Pope Francis fears an abyss of despair in Haiti

“Haiti is currently in a critical situation. I fear that he will fall into an abyss of despair”, worried Pope Francis on July 29, during a visit to Canada. The Holy Father and Head of State of the Vatican, who emphasizes that he is aware of the reality in Haiti, promises prayers and penance for the country undermined by political instability and the proliferation of armed gangs.

Every day, Haiti continues its descent into hell. Even the most heinous crime is becoming commonplace in the country. The armed gangs which control in whole or in part all the municipalities of the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince impose their will. The institutions are on their knees and the government exists only in name. Asked during a visit to Canada at the end of July by a Haitian Jesuit about the situation in Haiti, Pope Francis did not hide his concerns.

“Haiti is currently in a critical situation. He is going through an ordeal, as if he could not find the right path. It does not seem to me that the international organizations have understood what to do. I feel very close to Haiti, especially because I am constantly informed of the situation by some of my priest friends,” replied the head of state of the Vatican.

“I fear that he will fall into an abyss of despair,” added the leader of the Catholic Church in the world.

“How can we help Haiti grow in hope? If there is one thing we can do as a church, it is certainly prayer, penance… But we have to ask ourselves how we can help. The people of Haiti are a noble people. There, I am simply telling you that I am aware of what is happening,” Pope Francis said.

Following the shooting on Saturday June 25 in Delmas, a suburb of Port-au-Prince, of Sister Luisa Dell'Orto, a nun of Italian nationality, the Pope had prayed for the Haitian people, particularly for the children, "so that they can have a more serene future, free from misery and violence", said the head of the Catholic Church.
